Essential oils have been used for centuries by many different cultures around the world. An oil is "essential" because it is the "essence of" the plant's fragrance.
Essential oils have been used in Egypt, Greece, India, Rome, Chine, and Europe since 2700 BC. They are even documented in the Bible 9 different times. Cedarwood, frankincense, fir, cinnamon, myrrh, myrtle and spikenard are all mentioned throughout the old and new testaments.
Rene-Maurice Gattefosse, a French cosmetic chemist, severely burned his hands and arms in an accidental lab explosion in 1910. He extinguished the flames, but as he described it, “both my hands were covered with rapidly developing gas gangrene.” He submerged his burns in a large container of lavender oil, reporting that “just one rinse with lavender essence stopped the gasification of the tissue. This treatment was followed by profuse sweating and healing which began the next day.”
Historical records and the traditions of many cultures give us insights and understanding of how essential oils were used in the past and how they can benefit our lives today.
How are essential oils created? Essential oils are made when raw plant material,(flowers, leaves, wood, bark, roots, seeds, & peel) is distilled with pure water. The oil is created and can be used in a variety of ways. It is exciting to think about how essential oils can help you take care of your own and your family's health. They can be applied topically, breathed in aromatically, or taken internally.

Not all oils are created equal and it is important to use Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade oils that can be ingested, inhaled, and applied to the skin. Without an accepted standard for essential oil quality, doTERRA created its own testing process, calling it CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade®. The CPTG process certifies that there are no added fillers, synthetic ingredients, or harmful contaminants in their essential oils that would reduce their efficacy.
