A Message from Annie
The Oxford English Dictionary defines the word "thankful" as "pleased and relieved." Both of those are great feelings. Thankful is an adjective, you see. It is a descriptive word of someone.
The same dictionary defines the word "grateful" as "showing an appreciation of kindness." Grateful is a verb. It is an action word. Ah Ha! Here is a moment of realization. There is a big difference in thankfulness and gratefulness. I do not know anyone who is not thankful for their family, their home, and their lives, but finding people who are grateful is a little more difficult.
Everyone who is grateful is thankful, but not everyone who is thankful is grateful. The difference? The verb. The action of demonstrating your thankfulness is what makes you grateful. How are you demonstrating your gratefulness to your family, friends, community, city, country, and world?
William Arthur Ward, one of our most quoted writers of inspirational thoughts once said, "Gratitude can transform common days into thanksgiving, turn routine jobs into joy, and change ordinary opportunities into blessings."
Think about that as you gather with your family and friends this year. However, keep in mind that we should show our thankfulness every day of our lives. We should practice giving thanks with by showing gratitude through doing, giving, and serving. Write a note. Tell someone how much they mean to you. Give a hug. Volunteer to help. Cook a meal. The ways to to illustrate gratefulness are innumerable.
